Ear Correction Surgery (otoplasty)

Procedure - Quiet often the procedure is performed on children between the ages 5 and 10. Some children are bullied at school, and unlike the nose the ears don’t change their shape during the teenage years. Naturally many adults go through this procedure as well in order to change either the shape or the angle of their ears. In some cases only one ear needs correction, and in other cases patients require both ears to be reshaped. There is hardly any scarring left. Surgeons reshape the cartilage and in some cases even reduce the amount of cartilage. The surgeon can then sculpture the cartilage giving the ear a completely new look. After the operation, the patients are required to wear a special bandage over their ear/s for a period of a week.

Risks and Side effects - Temporary throbbing, aching, swelling, redness, numbness, infection of cartilage, excess scarring, blood clots and hematoma, mismatched or artificial-looking ears - There may possibly be a need to repeat the surgery in order to correct recurrence of protrusion.

Nose reshaping surgery (nose job, rhinoplasty)

Procedure - For this procedure, patients are required to be above the age of 18. The majority of patients know what bothers them about their nose, but not actually how they would like their nose to look like after the operation. Using a computer simulation, the surgeon can generate a purposed image of the partient’s nose. Naturally, these images can not possibly predict the exact outcome of the intervention and in some cases the results may differ from the image the patient was shown on screen. Nose reshaping surgery is conducted through the nostrils, and all work is done from the inside of the nose, leaving no visible scars on the patient’s face. The surgeon separates the skin over the nose from the bone and cartilage, and reshapes the cartilage from inside the nasal cavity. When the reshaping is done, the surgeon reattaches the skin on top of the nose. After the procedure, patients must wear a cast for one to two weeks in order to ensure the healing process is undisturbed and to protect the face: any blow to the face at this stage will be extremely painful and possibly dangerous. Patients usually report sensitivity in the nose area during the first month after the procedure. Patients should know to expect large and quiet colourful bruising after the procedure, which usually takes 2-3 weeks to completely disappear, at which time patients can return to their jobs.

Scar tissue healing period - six months.

Risks and side effects - Using saws, grafts and chisels, success is almost entirely reliant on the skill of your surgeon. Even with the most experienced specialist you may wake up looking like you've gone three rounds with Mike Tyson, and it could take up to three months for swelling to go down. Small burst blood vessels may appear as tiny red sports on the skin's surface; usually minor, but may be permanent.
